Runnin' With the Big Dogs

My best friend named this blog for me. She gives me all my good ideas but when I said I was going to credit her for the title, she reminded me that I’m always quoting my dad who used to say “If you’re gonna run with the big dogs, you gotta get off the porch…”

I guess it’s been a part of my lexicon for so long, I say it now without thinking. Kinda like “Have a nice day” or “Don’t let the door hit your butt on the way out.” I come from a long line of folks with sayings. My mother had a particular one she used a lot, too. It was “Don’t sit on the potty seat.” I don’t know why, but she would tell us this every time we left the house. It came to mean everything from “Don’t get arrested” to “Stay away from those kids smokin’ dope over at the Dairy Queen” to “Be back before I decide it’s time to come lookin’ for you.”

“What do you expect from a pig, but a grunt?” was my grandmother’s all-time winner. She used this one when her kids didn’t show up to perform some task she’d deemed important, like clean out the septic tank or plow up the garden. She was a tough one.

Anyway, this is where I’m coming when I want to run with the big dogs and I have something to say. Or, when I want to stroll with the medium-sized ones and hum a tune. Or, maybe even when I want to lay down with the little ones and get up with fleas.
